Despite the fact its debut season was FX’s breakout hit of 2022, for a while, The Old Man season 2 remained an uncertainty — but now, we have both a release date and a teaser trailer.
For background, production on season 1 had to be paused for leading man Jeff Bridges to undergo chemotherapy treatment for lymphoma. Thankfully, now the actor behind retired CIA operative Dan Chase’s cancer is in remission; and the series itself is ready to deliver more action.
“I’m feeling great now. I’m coming back for more punishment,” said Bridges during a TCA Panel (via Deadline).

“It’s so bizarre to me. In season 1, I was doing fight scenes with a nine-inch by 12-inch tumour in my stomach that didn’t hurt at all.”
Based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Thomas Perry, The Old Man follows Bridges’ Dan Chase, who is forced out of hiding when an assassination attempt breaches his off-grid sanctity.
The grizzled veteran soon finds himself on the run from Harold Harper (John Lithgow) — an old war buddy and FBI Assistant Director for Counterintelligence with whom Chase shares a complicated history. A high-stakes game of cat ‘n’ mouse ensues.

In season 2, Chase and Harper must team up to rescue FBI agent Angela Adams / Emily Chase (Alia Shawkat) from Afghan tribal leader Faraz Hamzad (Navid Negahban). The plot twist? All three men claim to be Angela / Emily’s biological father. Which should certainly make for compelling viewing.

The Old Man has been developed for television and written by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine, who brought the world Starz’s historical adventure series Black Sails.
The duo also executive produce the show alongside Jeff Bridges himself, Warren Littlefield, Dan Shotz, David Schiff, and MCU Spider-Man trilogy director Jon Watts; it’s unclear whether Watts has returned to direct episodes, given he’s been busy with Apple’s Wolfs starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.
The Old Man season 2 has a scheduled release date of September 12th, 2024 via Hulu (US) and Disney+ (Australia / International) — check out the teaser trailer above.
