The True Detective: Night Country trailer is finally here. With HBO teasing the fourth season of True Detective for a good while now, the network has today lifted the lid on what we can expect from the new series, which has been developed with Issa Lopez (Tigers Are Not Afraid) and Academy Award-winning director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) and is being led by another Academy Award-winner in the legendary Jodie Foster (Taxi Driver, The Accused, The Silence of the Lambs).

The new trailer was revealed as part of a massive press event held this week for Warners Bros. Discovery’s new streaming service Max, which will see both HBO Max and Discovery+ merge into one big streaming platform. Clearly, HBO is banking big on True Detective: Night Country being one of the service’s major lures

No official release date has been locked in for True Detective season 4, although it’s been reported that the completed project will start streaming later this year on Max.

Back in February 2021, Chief Content Officer at HBO, Casey Bloys, said that the team were “working with a couple of writers to find the right tone and take.” And it seems that tone has most definitely landed on dark and gloomy, channelling Fargo’s bleak setting with the show being set in Alaska

The official synopsis for True Detective: Night Country reads:

When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

The True Detective season 4 cast also includes Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw, Isabella Star Lablanc, Fiona Shaw, Aka Niviana, Anna Lambe, Joel D. Montgrand, Christopher Eccleston and John Hawkes. Lopez will be showrunner and writer, as well as director for all True Detective season 4 episodes. Meanwhile, Jenkins serves as executive producer alongside Foster, Adele Romanski, Mark Ceryak, Mari Jo Winkler, Chris Mundy, Alan Page Arriaga, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Cary Joji Fukunaga and Nic Pizzolatto.

As above, there is no release date for True Detective season 4 but we will see the show streaming before the end of the year.
