Few sporting franchises boast the same Cinderella story as Wrexham AFC.
Four years ago, when the languishing Welsh franchise – and world’s third-oldest professional football club – was acquired by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds for US$2.5 million, it was cynically (or perhaps realistically) painted as a streaming-minded stunt for the sole purpose of Disney+ content.
In the hard-fought seasons and FA Cup heroics since, and not to mention the three unprecedented promotions in a row later (the most recent of which came down to 2024-25 League One season’s final game); McElhenney’s once-ridiculed declaration to enter the Premier League is just a single promotion away from becoming a reality.
“There was understandably a lot of titters, laughter, and giggles, but it’s starting to feel like a tangible thing that could actually come to fruition,” Reynolds told Sky Sports.
The latest season of Welcome To Wrexham will obviously revisit what was arguably the most challenging chapter of the Red Dragons’ rise in the pyramid across another eight episodes: from being rudely awakened to the fact they were no longer the biggest fish in the pond, especially against the likes of the monied Birmingham City (backed by quarterback legend Tom Brady), to the dramatic roster restructure as certain fan-favourite players struggled to make the step up.
“I think everybody knows the jump is huge. But I’m confident we will be well prepared for that,” said manager Phil Parkinson.
Fifth-tier National League to the EFL Championship, now valued at approximately £100 million and on the doorstep of top-flight competition… Hollywood itself would hesitate to script something this unbelievable.
