The NBA may have officially entered the off-season after Denver’s historic ascension to the 2022-23 throne, but there certainly won’t be any shortage of basketball-related content. Especially considering Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty season 2 is right around the corner (which finally has a teaser trailer).

Picking up where the “controversial” first season left off, the Los Angeles Lakers will now defend their title against perennial rival franchise the Boston Celtics with the battle for on-court supremacy between Magic Johnson (Quincy Isiah) and Larry Bird (Sean Patrick Small) taking centre stage.

Having laid the foundation for an all-out clash throughout the earlier episodes, a real-life conflict that can trace its origins to the NBA icons’ high school days, the forthcoming instalment promises to deliver more must-see television, as per HBO’s stellar reputation.

Quincy Isiah and Sean Patrick Small have returned alongside the likes of John C. Reilly as Lakers owner Dr Jerry Buss, Jason Clarke as team exec Jerry West, Adrien Brody as legendary coach Pat Riley, Jason Segel as the other coach Paul Westhead, along with Gaby Hoffmann as Claire Rothman, Tracy Letts as Jack McKinney, DeVaughn Nixon as his actual father Norm Nixon, Solomon Hughes as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Hadley Robinson as Jeanie Buss.

Created by Max Borenstein and Jim Hetch – and based on the book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s by Jeff Pearlman – you can also expect the return of The Big Short filmmaker Adam McKay, who juggles directing and executive producing duties.

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty season 2 premieres on August 7th here in Australia via Binge and Foxtel / Foxtel GO – check out the teaser trailer above.
