  • Yellowstone season 5 (Part 2) has definitively locked in its release date with a full-length trailer.
  • The latest preview hints at a return from Kevin Costner as John Dutton, despite having since departed the hit neo-western show after falling out with co-creator Taylor Sheridan.
  • While this marks the flagship series’ final season, the franchise will continue through its spin-offs and sequel show The Madison currently in development.

Almost two years after the first half wrapped up, Yellowstone season 5 (Part 2) is — at long last — making its hotly anticipated premiere on November 10th, 2024.

“Everyone’s forgotten who runs this valley… Time to remind them,” Kevin Costner, who portrays family patriarch, Yellowstone Ranch big dog, and Governor of Montana.

This is intercut with flashes of all the beloved characters — Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), Monica Long Dutton (Kelsey Asbille), and more — and more references to the full-scale war they’ve been talking about for several seasons now.

The question of how involved Kevin Costner has been down the home stretch, however, is still up in the air. Especially in the context of his other public divorce with series co-creator and television’s busiest man, Taylor Sheridan.

While the footage dropped today puts John Dutton front and centre, it also alludes to the end being rather nigh. Meaning we shouldn’t be surprised if the old rancher meets his maker nice and early.

“I just realised that I’m not going to be able to continue Yellowstone season 5-B or into the future,” Costner admitted in an X (nee Twitter) post earlier this year.

“It was something that really changed me. I loved it, and I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning.”

But fear not: given the gamechanging success of Yellowstone, and how much of a golden goose Mr Sheridan (alongside co-creator Art Linson) has proven to be for Paramount, the franchise will continue through several spin-offs and another flagship series.

The latter, dubbed The Madison, reportedly stars Michelle Pfeiffer as wealthy matriarch Stacy Clyburn, who moves her family from NYC to Montana “in the wake of her husband and brother-in-law’s tragic deaths in a plane crash.” Suits alum Patrick J. Adams to Beau Garrett are also set to appear.

This spiritual sequel was initially in talks to be led by Matthew McConaughey, and at one point, Kurt Russell was also in the conversation; though that’s obviously since fallen through. Cameras officially began rolling back in August 2024 in Montana, New York, and Texas with the expectation of premiering in 2025.

In terms of those spin-offs, aside from a second season of the celebrated prequel 1923 starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, there’s another prequel in 1943 (carrying on from the former and the concluded 1883); and 6666 set in the present day on Texas’ iconic Four Sixes Ranch (the one Taylor Sheridan actually owns) where Jefferson White’s Jimmy Hurdstrom is canonically hunkered down.

Plus there’s the entire slew of possibly connected properties in the Sheridan-verse like Lioness: Spec Ops, which returns for its sophomore instalment later this month, and the forthcoming Land Man with Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Hamm, which debuts a week after Yellowstone season 5-B.

Like we said: Taylor Sheridan is television’s busiest man.

Once again, the Yellowstone season 5 (Part 2) release date has been set for November 10th, 2024 — keep an eye out for it on Paramount+ and check out the trailer above.
