During the official rollout of iOS 14 – an update hailed as “the biggest ever” – your iPhone received a brand new secret button courtesy of the brains over at Apple. Yes, even on the older models out there. And we’re willing to wager you haven’t even noticed it yet.
This secret button, of course, isn’t a physical one. Hence why it has successfully flown under the radar up until this point. It’s more of an additional feature and it goes by the name of Back Tap.
Back Tap / this secret iPhone button essentially turns the back of your device into a touch-sensitive component, which you can customise to do whatever you need when prompted with a double or triple tap.

For those of you who are still sceptical at this point, here’s where you’ll be able to discover (and enable) it for yourself: Settings > Accessibility > Touch – then scroll down to the section specifically marked Back Tap. Once you’ve toggled it to “on”, you can choose whatever function you want to pair to a certain amount of taps. Screenshots, volume control, lockscreen, you name it. It’s custom shortcut city here.
It is worth noting that despite iOS 14 being compatible with devices from the iPhone SE onwards – and even the iPod Touch (7th generation) – only the following will support Back Tap. This, of course, includes the latest iOS 15 models, so the entire iPhone 13 range.
