Saudi Arabia has opted to give their economy a boost via lucrative new plans. The objective? To activate hundreds of square kilometres of desert into inhabitable cities. This undertaking is rumoured to run up a total estimated cost of $7 billion USD, and the more you look into it, the more it makes sense why it comes with such a hefty price tag.

The government is hoping to create more opportunities for jobs and diversify their economy away from the historically profitable yet volatile crude oil industry, Saudi Arabia being the world’s largest exporter. So this project is less about infrastructure, and more of a reinvestment into the nation’s future economic stability.

It doesn’t take a genius to see that there is certainly a need to put the country’s eggs in more than one barrel, so to speak, and this is quite the chess move towards preventing as such. One key development currently in the process of becoming a reality is the “Knowledge Economic City” due to reach completion by 2020.
