Suspended nearly 20m above blue chip Mulholland Drive is the one and only Garcia House, a modernist masterpiece of a home designed by the renowned architect John Lautner. Now, for the first time in two decades, the property is back on the market with its owners seeking $23 million to part with this iconic example from America’s architectural history.
Also known as the Rainbow House, the property at 7436 Mulholland Dr, Los Angeles, was originally designed by John Lautner for the American composer Russell Garcia and is perhaps most well-known from its appearance in Lethal Weapon 2. Lautner trained under Frank Lloyd Wright as a junior architect, a fact that bolsters the stellar reputation of this three-bedroom home that features an almond-shaped parabolic roof, making it instantly recognisable.
The home is rich with design detail, from the terrazzo flooring and the coloured stained glass windows to the swift contour of the master bedroom’s ceiling and the kayak-shaped pool outside (added in 2008), there’s a lot to love about this remarkable residence. The current owners, DreamWorks executive Bill Damaschke and his partner John McIlwee, purchased the Garcia House in 2002 from actor Vincent Gallo and are now listing the home for US$16 million (AU$23 million).
