Don’t let anyone tell you any different. From landmark replicas to Star Wars models and everything else in between, LEGO is art (and a sound investment that was outperforming gold in profitability, at one stage). That’s precisely why the purveyors of bricked fun have consistently released LEGO versions of iconic masterpieces, like The Great Wave Off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai.

Joining a stacked lineup that already includes Vincent van Gough’s Starry Night at the beginning of next month, this forthcoming 1,810-piece build kit is (obviously) based on the famed woodblock print from circa 1831; a highly-recognisable component of Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series which has been described as “possibly the most reproduced image in the history of all art.”

Fun fact: in addition to eventually being showcased everywhere from the British Museum in London to New York’s MoMA, it would go on to directly influence an entire run sheet of notable European artists — Claude Debussy, Claude Monet, as well as Katsushika Hokusai’s LEGO tribute stablemate, Vincent van Gogh.

Mirroring the Edo period original, LEGO’s Hokusai – The Great Wave depicts a stormy seascape with cresting waves in Prussian blue, three battered barges, a snow-capped Mount Fuji in the background, and is bound to be a tasteful (and subtly whimsical) addition to your decor.

LEGO’s Hokusai – The Great Wave will be available to purchase here in Australia from February 1st. The RRP? $169.99. Hit the link below to pre-order yours.
