Richmond is best known for being next door to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and for its world-class bánh mì; but the other thing folks come here to enjoy is the truly elite selection of pubs.
Yes, Fitzroy has some of the best pubs in Melbourne and you can always find a good cocktail in Collingwood; but Richmond has some of the greatest pint-sinking establishments in the entirety of the Victorian capital.
So if you’re hunting for a watering hole to enjoy a beer at before the footy, or perhaps a pub meal on a Sunday afternoon, this is the definitive list of Richmond’s best pubs — complete with anecdotes from a local who has lived in the suburb.

Boss Hunting’s Favourite Pub In Richmond
The Corner Hotel
Not only a Richmond institution but a Melbourne institution, The Corner Hotel remains one of the city’s best live music venues and has been for decades.
If you need convincing, a handful of the acts that have played at The Corner Hotel include Blink-182, Diplo, Crowded House, Paul Kelly, Grimes, Queens of the Stone Age, The White Stripes, Vengaboys, U2, Mick Jagger, and many more.
As the legend goes, during The White Stripes soundcheck ahead of their gig here back in 2003, they accidentally created what would become the riff to Seven Nation Army.
It’s a location cemented in the pages of Australian music history, but even if live music isn’t your thing; it’s also a fantastic venue to enjoy a chicken parmy while you’re watching the footy, or catching up with the crew for beers on the weekend. No matter if you live in Melbourne or you’re just visiting, The Corner Hotel is a perfect spot to spend an afternoon.
The Best Richmond Pubs Right Now
Mt View Hotel
The Mt View Hotel is a personal favourite, not only because I used to live around the corner and it was my local, but because it does everything you want a pub to do really well.
You might think it’s a small pub when you first roll through the door, but it’s got four different levels to enjoy that take you from dining room to rooftop. At the latter, you’ll get solid views of the CBD.
The kitchen makes great food, the range of beers is decent, there are plenty of screens to watch whatever sport it is you’re into; and there’s also a pool table and ping pong table to have a hit if you want. Far from a fancy gastro pub, with a focus on unpretentious and friendly service, the Mt View Hotel is one of my favourite pubs in Melbourne. Highly recommend.
Richmond Club Hotel
Located on Swan Street at the intersection of Lennox, the Richmond Club Hotel is one of a couple of pubs that footy fans go to before and after the game at the MCG, and there’s a good reason for that.
The kitchen serves up food that’s better than most of the competition — which also makes it a favourite haunt for casual lunches in Richmond — and the range of beers on tap is, to say the least, extensive.
Upstairs you’ll find a rooftop garden that overlooks the train line, while the back of the venue is home to a comfortable beer garden. It’s a little more up-market than your typical inner-suburbs pub, but it’s all the better for it.
Spread Eagle Hotel
Situated on the corners of Bridge Rd and Coppin St, the Spread Eagle Hotel — or The Spready as it’s known — is a local favourite. The kitchen serves up classic pub food, but some of the highest quality you’ll find around; while the bar is well-stocked with all your favourite beers and a decent selection of wine.
The staff are welcoming and friendly, they’ve always got the footy on, and its massive windows mean it possesses a level of ventilation you’ll be grateful for once the jugs and darts start floating.
It doesn’t have the same hectic foot traffic of a spot like The Corner Hotel or the Richmond Club Hotel, but that’s exactly why locals love it so much.
Royston Hotel
Nestled near the banks of the Yarra River, the Royston Hotel stands as a beacon of warmth and local charm. Known affectionately among regulars as “The Roy,” this pub offers an inviting atmosphere that makes everyone feel like part of the community.
With its walls echoing the laughter and conversations of its patrons, the Royston Hotel prides itself on its selection of craft beers and local wines, catering to anyone who might walk through the front door.
The staff are known for their friendliness and contribute significantly to the welcoming atmosphere that makes “The Roy” a place where locals love whiling away their afternoon. Whether you’re here to catch up with friends over a pint or to savour the flavours of a countermeal, the Royston Hotel is an escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
London Tavern Hotel
Tucked away on the quieter streets of Richmond, the London Tavern Hotel is a hidden gem that captures the essence of a traditional British pub, with a distinctly Melbourne twist.
Affectionately known as “The London,” its red brick façade and classic interiors are a nod to the timeless charm of its original design and purpose. The tavern’s menu offers a delightful fusion of British pub fare and Aussie favourites, crafted with care and served with textbook affable service.
At the bar, the selection of local and imported beers is as inviting as it is impressive; complementing an array of solidly selected wines for every preference. The London’s atmosphere is vibrant when the footy’s on, yet relaxed when it’s not, making it an ideal spot for after-work drinks, weekend gatherings, and everything in between.
With friendly staff, good food, and local spirit, the London Tavern Hotel in Richmond is more than just a pub — it’s a proper community hub.
Bridge Hotel
The Bridge Hotel is located — you guessed it — right next to the bridge over the Yarra River on its namesake road, presenting a good blend of urban sophistication and rustic charm.
Stepping inside feels like entering an alleyway, with its cleverly designed interior mimicking the laneways of Melbourne, complete with faux building facades and street-style lighting. This architectural feature not only pays homage to the city’s culture, but also creates an immersive dining and drinking experience.
The pub’s menu is wide-ranging and filled with the classics, offering contemporary Australian cuisine with a focus on quality ingredients and flavour. Whether you’re indulging in a burger or a faultlessly cooked steak, the Bridge Hotel ensures each plate is exactly what you want. The drinks list is equally solid, featuring a wide range of local and international beers, wines, and cocktails.
With an inviting ambience and friendly staff, the Bridge Hotel is a beloved destination of Richmond locals for a reason — perfect for just about any occasion.
The National Hotel
The National Hotel is a vibrant blend of traditional charm and modern flair. Situated in the bustling heart of the suburb on Victoria Street, this iconic venue is renowned for its eclectic architecture, which seamlessly blends Asian-inspired aesthetics with the rustic, cosy feel of a classic Australian pub.
The National’s culinary offerings are a reflection of Richmond’s diverse culture, with a menu that combines global street food and pub classics, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every palate.
The bar doesn’t disappoint either, boasting an impressive selection of local craft beers, wines, and exotic cocktails.
The Posty
The Posty is just about as close to the train station as you can get (apart from the Corner Hotel, maybe), and serves up a charming retreat with its unique blend of warmth and heritage.
Originally constructed as a post office, this historical building with its classic Victorian architecture has been thoughtfully transformed into a bustling bar and restaurant. The menu at The Posty is a celebration of local produce, featuring gourmet pizzas and an array of modern Australian dishes, while the bar is well-appointed with a diverse selection of craft beers, boutique wines, and signature cocktails.
With its warm, inviting atmosphere and commitment to quality produce, The Posty has become a beloved spot among Richmond locals and visitors alike, offering a perfect blend of intimate casual dining and lively socialising.
How Boss Hunting Chose The Best Pubs In Richmond
Growing up in the inner north of Melbourne, Richmond was one of the first suburbs I lived in during my post-university years. It’s safe to say I know the pubs of Richmond like the back of my hand and have visited all of them many, many times.
