While Sydney’s leaning towards grand brasseries and old-school American grills in 2023, it seems Melbourne’s food and drink scene is looking to the sky. Earlier this year, the city was gifted Atria at the swanky new Ritz-Carlton, an 80th-floor restaurant and bar helmed by Executive Chef Michael Greenlaw. Now Chapel Street’s Beverly Rooftop climbs a similar ladder, taking cues from the lavish rooftop venues you’d typically find in the much sunnier city of Los Angeles.
Cameron Northway, the man behind LOTI, Rocker Bondi (in Sydney) and drinks company Sweet&Chilli, has partnered with Goldfields House guns Marco Gattino and Lachlan Thompson to bring Melbourne its latest rooftop space. The indoor-outdoor venue, designed by local studio Mitchell & Eades, boasts some remarkable views across the Melbourne skyline and has been designed with a retractable glass roof.
Beverly Rooftop may be most notable for its views but consider Northway’s other venues, the food and drink should be on point as well. Wine lovers will find an expansive drinks list to get through, referencing biodynamic and organic sips along with a healthy selection of sake and a cocktail lineup that pulls from worldly influences using native botanicals.
As far as the food goes, the open kitchen is run by chef David Ball (The Glass House in Hobart) and nods to a cross-section of southern Californian influences blended with modern Australian. Dishes include burrata, truffle fondue with aged balsamic, a creme fraiche and lobster cannoli, pulled duck and caviar sliders, and substantials like marron and spanner crab pasta served in shrimp bisque.
