It’s that time of the year again, folks. Christmas morning for Aussie whisk(e)y lovers. The rare and elusive Starward Ginger Beer Cask Whisky is back by popular demand for its sixth release – but similar to previous occasions, on a strictly limited basis.
Historically, this cult classic drop has sold out across the country faster than you can say “single malt.” This is why the ballot system of purchase introduced last year has also made a return. Those successfully drawn will be offered a chance to cop for the relatively reasonable price of $119. In the highly unlikely event there are any remaining bottles after the fact, they’ll be available to purchase for the same price on World Whisky Day.
“In years gone by, you statistically had more chance of getting into Harvard than getting one of these prized bottles – even I only get one,” noted David Vitale, Starward founder.
“It’s a thrill to see the popularity of this yearly release continue to sky-rocket as our distillers and blenders get even bolder with their experimentation.”

According to Starward Production Director Sam Slaney, the latest interpretation will be the team’s most experimental – not to mention most expressive – Ginger Beer Cask Whisky to date.
“Ginger Beer Cask has garnered an almost cult-like following, so the pressure was on to craft yet another standout bottling,” says Slaney.
“We started by brewing a fiery ginger beer in French and American oak barrels at home in our Port Melbourne distillery. We loaded our recipe up with citrus peel and fresh ginger.”
Once the barrels staves had “soaked in the spicy goodness”, they were emptied before being refilled with a union of Apera and red wine barrel-aged single malt whiskies.

“This year’s expression won’t disappoint. It’s all ginger, orange, and dark chocolate on the nose. The flavour comes swift and sure – strong spicy ginger, fresh vanilla, and pineapple.”
“Candied ginger and citrus provide a big and warming mouthfeel that’s been skilfully balanced with the lingering dark fruits sweetness from the Apera and the bright juicy flavours of the red wine barrel maturation.”
Registration for the Starward Ginger Beer Cask Whisky ballot closes on May 9th – winners will be drawn from May 10th to May 14th. Any stock which isn’t snapped up between then will be available to purchase on World Whisky Day (May 15th) via Starward’s online store or onsite at the Port Melbourne distillery shop.
