  • “Progressive Indian” diner Gaggan has taken home the top honour for the fifth time at the 2025 edition of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.
  • Thailand made the strongest showing with 11 Bangkok entries including Gaggan; Hong Kong (eight), Japan (nine), South Korea (six), Singapore (six), and Mainland China (four) followed.
  • The prestigious list was deliberated upon by 350 regional voters consisting of chefs, restaurateurs, food writers, and more who personally experienced the goods over the past 18 months.

Asia’s hottest dining establishments have been named for another year at the annual 50 Best Restaurants ceremony.

Announced at the Grand Hyatt Seoul, Thailand’s Gaggan has climbed two places from the 2024 rankings to reclaim the culinary throne in 2025. This marks the fifth occasion it’s won the top honour.

The “vibrant yet intimate” fine diner is spearheaded by the eponymous musician turned chef-proprietor, Gaggan Anand, who has made a name for himself championing “progressive Indian cuisine with a fine-dining twist.”

His menus frequently incorporate French, Thai, and Japanese influences; as well as a passion for molecular gastronomy, which the Kolkata-born Anand developed at Spain’s El Bulli alongside Ferran Adrià.

“When we started the restaurant, it was not about me but about Asia. When I was young, I’d never have imagined that [Asia] would be a gastronomic hub, yet look where we are,” said Mr Anand.

The Top 5 are rounded out by Hong Kong’s 50 Best fixture The Chairman (the city’s first-ever #1 establishment crowned back in 2021), another Hong Kong entrant in Wing, Tokyo’s Sézanne, followed by Seoul’s Mingles.

As for the newbies, there were a few other notable list debutantes in this edition of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Beijing’s Lamdre, for one, made the cut at #50 with its innovative plant-based offering that speaks to growing region-wide demand for sustainable dining; Jakarta’s August entered at #49, a reflection of Indonesia’s ever-rising culinary profile; while Seoul’s Eatanic Garden received the Highest New Entry Award at #25.
