The 50 Best Pizzerias In Asia-Pacific For 2022 Named & Ranked

When it comes to an authoritative ranking of some of the world’s best restaurants and bars, most look to World’s 50 Best who each year release exhaustive lists aimed at guiding gourmands and drink connoisseurs to worthy bucket list experiences. But there are plenty of other similar lists out there that are held in high regard, typically focusing on more niche categories like 50 Top Pizza – an Italian body that goes through and, unsurprisingly, churns out a definitive ranking of the world’s best pizzerias by region. Results are typically split up by continent, although the edition that examines the best pizza in Australia, New Zealand Asia is typically squashed into one big list – hence, this definitive ranking of the best pizzerias in Asia-Pacific.

And it’s a good one. At least us Aussies, as the country is represented on the list quite a few times. Including at the very top with 48h Pizza e Gnocchi Bar in Melbourne being named as the number one pizzeria in Asia-Pacific.

This knocks off list-regular 400 Gradi in Brunswick, which is strangely nowhere to be found in the top 50. Instead, other Australian pizzerias that make the cut include Al Taglio in Surry Hills, ostensibly the best pizzeria in Sydney at #14, just beating out fellow Sydney pizza spots Bella Brutta (#25), Gigi Pizzeria (#27), Lucio Pizzeria (#43) and Via Napoli (#49).

Other Melbourne pizzerias that made the list include A25 Pizzeria (#35) and SPQR Pizzeria (#37). Adelaide manages to squeeze in just one entry to round off Australia’s representation, with Ettica Pizza coming in at #42.

2022 marks the first year Australia and Asia have been amalgamated under the Asia-Pacific ranking. Vittoria Dell’Anna from 50 Top Pizza reportedly put together a crack team of 150 “pizza inspectors” to compile the list across Asia and Oceania, resulting in what should be a fairly comprehensive hit list for travellers planning to jump around this side of the world in search of the best pizza they can find.

The 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific ranking has been released alongside a number of “special” awards that get even more granular when we’re talking about seeking out the best pizzas.

The pizzeria with the best fried food is, for example, Bottega in Bejing, while the actual Pizza of the Year goes to the smoked mozzarella, pecorino, cherry tomatoes and basil number from Pizza Strada in Azabu-Juban, Tokyo – not far from Roppongi Hills. Notably, the pizzeria itself only comes in seventh place in the overall best pizzerias list.

Tokyo seems to have the highest density of top-quality pizzerias across Asia and Oceania, with no less than 12 entries on the list. Bangkok and Hong Kong also have strong representation on the best pizzerias list.

The list, while focused on the Asia-Pacific region only, also stands next to similar rankings for USA and Europe. The overall global ranking will be revealed next month at a special ceremony in Naples.
