- Golden Century is making a full-scale comeback at Crown Sydney, Barangaroo in early 2025.
- The Chinatown institution was one of the more prolific hospitality-based casualties of the pandemic, shuttering back in 2021 after over three decades of operating.
- This new location, while only a quarter of its former 600-seat Sussex Street site, promises all the quality Cantonese cuisine Sydney had grown to love it for.
Like a phoenix from the ashes, Golden Century has risen to the heights of Crown Sydney, replacing the now-closed Chinese restaurant Silks on the tower’s third floor.
“It was time for Golden Century to come back,” said co-owner Billy Wong.

“We feel that we have a great synergy with Crown’s approach to hospitality — focusing on quality and the guest experience, making them feel welcome and at home.”
Wong, who is set to spearhead the new location with his parents in advisory roles, continued: “Golden Century is where it all began and we are excited to once again welcome in our loyal customers, serving our beloved Cantonese classics in a picture-perfect location that overlooks Sydney harbour and beyond.”
“We are thrilled to become the new home of the iconic Golden Century, offering our guests an experience that is at once nostalgic and exciting,” said Crown Sydney CEO Stanford Le.
After 32 years of serving the Cantonese goods, the storied Chinatown institution’s closure marked a dark chapter in Sydney’s post-COVID dining scene. And despite the late-night Chinese diner that’s since replaced it at its old Sussex Street location (dubbed “Royal Palace Seafood“), the signature magic just hasn’t been recaptured over the last three years.
But in light of this news, we taste a hint of optimism.

In terms of what you can expect to enjoy in those unmistakable porcelain bowls and plates — against the comforting ambience of its live fish tanks — Crown Sydney’s latest venue will pay homage to the original menu with Golden Century classics like XO pippies, live lobster cooked two ways, and abalone steamboat; as well as Peking duck, salt and pepper squid, and a lunchtime yum cha service.
Parallel to this, the Barangaroo landmark is also welcoming Icebergs Dining Room & Bar for a summer residency at The Waiting Room (dubbed “Icebergs Harbour Bar”) — where it’ll temporarily join the ranks of a’Mare, Woodcut, Nobu, Oncore by Clare Smyth, and come early 2025, Golden Century 2.0.
