Mexican restaurants are a dime a dozen in Melbourne, but when it comes to Tex Mex-influenced eateries, the city is lacking. Enter the recently opened El Camino Cantina in Fitzroy.
Taking over the abandoned Fitzroy Social, El Camino Cantina is a vibrant venue that seats 400 and serves delicious burritos and margaritas in glasses as big as your head. Decked out in neon lights with interesting murals on the walls and soundtracked by cheesy 80s and 90s hits, eating at El Camino is like experiencing one big sombrero wearing, taco-fuelled Mexican party.
The food is unashamedly Tex-Mex, meaning nachos overflowing with melted cheese, burritos packed full of flavour, spicy fajitas and an assortment of tacos with various fillings sure to have your tastebuds going wild. While waiting for your meal you can stuff your face with unlimited free chips and salsa served in restored Ford and Chevy trunks, and for those of you who aren’t meat fans, there are a plethora of vegan options.
The drinks menu is just as stacked, with six different types of frozen margaritas (try the Red Bull mix if you’re having a big night), a variety of special cocktails, tasty towers of sangria and a wide selection of local and international wines and beers.
If that’s not enough to win you over, El Camino has everyday specials, including $2 tacos on Tuesdays, 10-cent wings on Wednesdays (when you buy a drink) and a weekday happy hour from 4 – 6 pm.
El Camino Cantina is currently trading at 222 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.
