With Easter just around the corner, we’re now starting to see a bunch of Australia’s best food and drink maestros attempt to capitalise on the holiday with limited-edition products. We’ve already seen Margaret River’s only distillery bring back its second year of Hot Cross Rum in the lead-up to Easter and now the gelato lords at Messina are planning to bring back their very popular limited edition Easter eggs, pushing the nice little prospect of gelato-filled shells of chocolate upon the masses.

Last year when Messina pulled out these Easter eggs, the announcement spurred a massive surge in demand. It’s unlikely this year will be any different. Each Messina Easter egg is handmade out of milk chocolate and filled with various flavours of creamy gelato, sold in a three-pack priced at $95 each. The three eggs are big enough to feed six to ten people, but it’s unlikely most would be content with just one bite.

The flavours this year sound outrageously delicious:

  • Custard and shortbread gelato with strawberry jam yolk in a strawberry white chocolate egg
  • Vanilla and coconut gelato, mango sorbet, mango gel yolk and baked cheesecake in a white chocolate and desiccated coconut egg
  • Chocolate gelato with peanut fudge, chocolate brownies and peanut butter caramel in a pretzel and milk chocolate egg

There’s also just a more standard Messina Easter egg without the gelato available. That one has been sprinkled with chopped roasted hazelnuts and comes with two waffle and white chocolate rocher balls inside, as well as two 65% dark chocolate and salted peanut rocher balls with caramel cream, and two milk chocolate and hazelnut rocher balls with Messinatella cream. The gelato-free Easter egg is priced at $70.

The two different Messina Easter kits are available for online orders from Monday, March 20 for collection over Easter between Thursday, April 6 and Sunday, April 9. If you end up randomly getting a golden egg in your pack, snap a photo and send it to Messina ([email protected]). That means you’ve won a year’s worth of Messina.

Take note of the pre-order release schedule on Messina’s official website as there will be staggered releases based on what store is closest to you.
