  • After something of a false start back in 2021, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is restaging its French Impressionism exhibition in 2025.
  • On loan from Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, over 100 masterpieces from Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, and plenty more are set to be showcased.
  • The exhibit had a brief tenure on Australian soil a few years prior before Melbourne’s lockdowns.

Life doesn’t offer us many second chances, but for Melbourne art enthusiasts, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has just announced a big one.

The acclaimed French Impressionism from the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) exhibition is returning next year to showcase more than 100 masterpieces from the likes of Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, and beyond.

This is a restaging of the exhibit that briefly made an appearance on Aussie soil before the lockdowns of 2021 spoiled the party; and you have NGV Director Tony Ellwood to thank for negotiating another loan from Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts.

The vaunted French impressionism collection not only represents one of the world’s largest but most significant — arriving on Australian shores to form part of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition series scheduled for 2025.

And for those of you who were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the goods the first time around, the NGV promises an entirely reimagined exhibition and catalogue. So it’ll certainly be worth revisiting.

The NGV’s French Impressionism exhibition opens to the public on June 6th, 2025 and will run until the October 5th, 2025. Head to the link below for more details and ticketing information.
