When you’ve got the same kind of wealth as the emperors of old, you might as well spend it on fortress building, and that’s exactly what everyone’s favourite tech billionaire-turned-amateur MMA fighter is doing right now.

Mark Zuckerberg is understood to be constructing a US$270 million (AU$400 million) end-of-days compound in a remote corner of Hawaii, which could very well be the most expensive home ever built in America.

According to an investigation by WIRED, Zucc has already spent US$170 million (AU$250 million) buying up parcels of land on the northeast side of the Hawaiian island Kauai, forming a 1,400-acre estate dubbed Koolau Ranch.

The Meta CEO is reportedly spending a further US$100 million (AU$148 million) on dwellings and other structures, which will be dominated by two mansions totalling 57,000 square feet that sit atop an underground survivalist bunker.

Totally off-grid with its own power, food, and water supplies, the estate is truly massive: containing at least 30 bedrooms and another 30 bathrooms, as well as being fitted out with elevators, industrial kitchens, and conference rooms.

At the bottom of the elevators is the 5,000-square-foot underground shelter — ready for the apocalypse — while the compound also features tennis courts, pools, a gym, a sauna, and plenty more (most definitely a replica Octagon).

Understandably for such a project, all of the local construction workers employed in the construction of this veritable island fortress are bound by strict NDAs.

“It’s fight club. We don’t talk about fight club,” one anonymous former contract employee told WIRED. “Anything posted from here, they get wind of it right away.”

The project’s completion date, along with whether Mark Zuckerberg intends to make the Hawaii compound his primary residence, has yet to be determined. However, if the estimated costs of Koolau Ranch are anywhere near accurate, it’ll be the world’s 9th most expensive private property ever constructed and the most expensive American property of all time.
