According to a recently published study (appropriately released on Valentine’s Day), the average penis length of men around the world has skyrocketed by a whopping 24% over the last 29 years. That’s a significant change, to say the least, and despite the fact that up to 45% of men believe they have a small penis, the scientists behind the study are none the wiser as to exactly why such a dramatic growth has occurred.

The study was undertaken by Stanford Medicine urology professor Michael Eisenberg, who looked at 75 studies from 1942 through to 2021 that measured the various lengths – flaccid, stretched, and erect – of 55,000 men’s penises from different parts of the world. The study concluded that even when adjusted for potential confounders such as, “geographic region, subject age, and subject population; erect penile length increased 24% over the past 29 years” and that, “given the significant implications, attention to potential causes should be investigated.”

In comments to Stanford Medicine’s Scope blog, Eisenberg went on to say that, “environmental pollutants or increasing sedentary lifestyles,” could be one of the sources for the increase, and that such a dramatic change could be cause for concern. Eisenberg believes that while there are no standardised measurements across populations in the same ways that height and weight are regularly measured, it’s an area that should change, and also commented that it’s, “important to ask if there are similar changes occurring to women’s reproductive organs.”
