They say two weeks is the difference between a good haircut and a bad one, but it looks like the opposite for the love life of Rupert Murdoch who cancelled the engagement for his fifth marriage just a fortnight after he announced it.
At the end of last month, it was revealed that the billionaire media tycoon had gotten down on one ageing knee and asked former model turned conservative radio host Ann Lesley Smith to marry him, a question she responded to with a resounding affirmative. Unfortunately for the unlucky in love Murdoch, the now-familiar sound of wedding bells wasn’t to ring in his ears for a final time and has called off the pending nuptials.
The news of the engagement was broken by gossip columnist Cindy Adams in Murdoch’s own New York Post, with the 92-year-old stating he was equal parts nervous and happy. The question was popped on St Patrick’s Day when Murdoch revealed what was surely a sizable Asscher-cut diamond solitaire to make his intentions to the 66-year-old Smith clear.
“I was very nervous. I dreaded falling in love — but I knew this would be my last. It better be. I’m happy,” Murdoch explained to the New York Post after the engagement.
While it’s not clear exactly what happened in the last fortnight for Murdoch to perform such a spectacular U-turn, however, his hopes that this engagement would be his final adventure in love might also turn out to be false. After all, there’s still life in him yet. Right?
