With Apple planning its ‘Far Out’ event for Wednesday, September 7 (that is, the big iPhone 14 launch), many assumed that the Californian company will be revealing two product lines: first, the four new iPhone models and second, the three new Apple Watch series 8 models. Now it appears that the show-stealer just may be the highly-anticipated Airpods Pro 2, which is reportedly being included in the event as per notorious Apple leaker, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. The AirPods Pro 2 announcement will most likely make good on all the rumours that have been swirling around over the past few months, indicating a substantial refresh to Apple’s true wireless earbuds.
This is the first bit of evidence we have of the AirPods Pro 2 release date, with Gurman writing in his newsletter that “the new AirPods Pro will update a model that first went on sale in October 2019.”
“I reported last year that the new AirPods Pro would arrive in 2022, and now I’m told that Wednesday will be their big unveiling.”
Much speculation surrounds Apple’s new high-end wireless earbuds. If rumours are true, AirPods Pro 2 will be a major change from the AirPods Pro with the potential for higher quality sound thanks to Apple’s Losless Audio Codec (ALAC) and a more stable design with a sports-friendly in-ear wing tip.

Other rumours suggest the AirPods Pro 2 could also come with a charging case that is able to emit a sound via Apple’s Find My app, blending it with Apple Airtag technology to benefit anyone who is prone to misplacing the case. It remains unconfirmed whether or not the charging case will include other features. Maybe Apple will completely surprise us by introducing a charging case with a touch display, much like JBL has done with the recently announced JBL Tour Pro 2 earbuds.
The original AirPods Pro was, as above, released in October 2019 which means the product’s third birthday is coming up in just a few weeks. It would make sense for Apple to want to celebrate this occasion by revealing the AirPods Pro 2, which means the earbuds should theoretically start shipping by the end of the month. Apple has a habit of releasing products very soon after they are revealed, which is why the iPhone 14 is expected to be released in Australia as soon as Friday, September 16.
If you’re one of those people who really need to watch the Apple ‘Far Out’ event live – that is, the iPhone 14, Apple Watch and now the AirPods Pro 2 announcement – you can do so on YouTube. The live event is scheduled for September 7 at 10 AM PT (which for Australia’s east coast means Thursday, September 8 at 3 AM).
