  • After being announced at WWDC 2024, AI-powered Apple Intelligence features are finally available on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
  • Key features include a writing assistant for messages and emails, advanced image editing, an improved version of Siri, plus notification summaries.
  • Apple Intelligence will be available through a free software update with the release of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.

After lengthy trials and beta testing, Apple Intelligence has arrived via a free software update — and there’s plenty of new features to be excited about.

Before we proceed, it’s worth noting only devices set to US English will receive the update (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and UK English language support will arrive in December). Meaning you’ll have to stomach the American dialect for a couple of months to use the Apple Intelligence Writing Tools for “rewriting, proofreading, and summarising text” across Mail, Messages, Notes, Pages, as well as third-party apps.

Think of it as a personal proofreader in your pocket: not only can it check the basic basics like grammar, sentence structure, and spelling, but it can also offer tonal suggestions and summarise chunks of text into bullet points or tables.

The feature that content creators will find most useful is the updated photos app, which now provides a Clean Up tool that can remove unwanted subjects from a photo. It also has a natural language searching function (e.g. “Gavin drinking a beer in Prague”) and can create slideshows of images called Memory Movies (e.g. “all the beers Gavin drank in Europe this summer”).

Another highlight from the suite of Apple Intelligence features is a significantly improved Siri, allowing you to misspeak or mispronounce words without needing to repeat yourself when your query is finished. Essentially, you’ll be able to chat more naturally to Siri and get things done, making it significantly more functional (and far less frustrating) than it’s been in the past.

More undoubtedly intuitive Apple Intelligence features are set to be rolled out in the coming months, so make sure your iPhone 16, mac, or iPad are up-to-date to experience them all.
