  • Fujifilm has just announced the GFX100RF, the brandโ€™s latest large format (medium format for those outside of Japan) digital camera.
  • It arrives with a fixed 35mm lens chosen for its versatility, will be capable of capturing a remarkable level of detail thanks to its 102-megapixel sensor, and weighs an impressively light 735g.
  • The Fujifilm GFX100RF will become available in April and will have an Australian RRP of $8,799.

For your casual photography enthusiast, large format cameras (or medium format for those outside of Japan) arenโ€™t often on the list of considerations because theyโ€™re generally too bulky to carry around with ease and require different lenses for different shots. The folks at Fujifilm want to solve those problems, announcing the GFX100RF which isnโ€™t only the lightest large format camera within the brandโ€™s line-up, but also has a fixed lens to keep shooting as straightforward as possible.

Its lightweight construction โ€“ tipping the scales at just 735g โ€“ is achieved thanks to the top plate thatโ€™s milled from a single block of aluminium and itโ€™s also relatively compact, making it one of the few large format cameras you could seriously consider slipping into a jacket pocket. Within that camera body is a very solid 102MP BSI CMOS sensor and the GFX100RF is also capable of shooting 4K30 video.

There are a couple of trade-offs that come with it, however, the most obvious of which is the double-edged sword of the 35mm f/4 leaf shutter fixed lens. Yes, itโ€™s easier to grab and go and the massive sensor means thereโ€™s plenty of resolution to crop into, but itโ€™s certainly got a bit less versatility than otherwise.

Another downside is Fujifilm has ditched the In-Body Image Stabilisation, which could present issues for a camera youโ€™re not always going to be using with a tripod.

Despite these considerations, Fujifilm has packed an enormous amount of other functionality into the GFX100RF, including a shutter that syncs flash at 1/4,000s, the brandโ€™s film simulations, a step zoom (via 45mm, 63mm, and 80mm crops), and a dedicated dial to switch between different aspect ratios.

Itโ€™s also weather-sealed, has twin UHS-II card slots, and a battery life that serves up 820 shots per charge. Itโ€™s not going to be a camera for everyone, especially given its price, but itโ€™s exciting to see Fujifilm continuing to push into new areas aimed at making great photography a little more accessible.

The Fujifilm GFX100RF will become available in April and will have an Australian RRP of $8,799.
