  • Fujifilm has just announced the GFX100RF, the brand’s latest medium format digital camera.
  • It arrives with a fixed 35mm lens, will be capable of capturing a remarkable level of detail thanks to its 102-megapixel sensor; and weighs an impressively light 735g.
  • The Fujifilm GFX100RF will be available domestically in April for $8,799.

For casual photography enthusiasts, medium format cameras aren’t often on the list of considerations given they’re generally too bulky to carry around (at least with ease) and require different lenses for different shots.

The folks at Fujifilm want to solve those problems by announcing the GFX100RF; which isn’t just the lightest medium format camera within the brand’s line-up, but also flaunts a fixed lens to keep shooting as straightforward as possible.

Its lightweight construction – tipping the scales at an almost negligible 735g – is achieved thanks to the top plate milled from a single block of aluminium; it’s also relatively compact, making this bad boy one of the few medium format cameras you could seriously consider slipping into a tote (as opposed to a full-blown backpack).

Within that streamlined camera body is a very solid 102MP BSI CMOS sensor. The GFX100RF is also capable of shooting 4K30 video.

There are, however, a couple of trade-offs. The most obvious being the double-edged sword that is the GFX100RF’s 35mm f/4 leaf shutter fixed lens. Yes, it’s easier to grab ‘n’ go and the massive sensor means there’s plenty of resolution to crop into, but it’s certainly got a bit less versatility.

Another downside is that Fujifilm has ditched the In-Body Image Stabilisation, which could present issues in extremely low-light situations when you haven’t packed the tripod.

Elsewhere fortunately, Fujiflim has piled on the functionality: incorporating into the GFX100RF a shutter that syncs flash at 1/4,000s; film simulations; a step zoom (via 45mm, 63mm, and 80mm crops), as well as a dedicated dial to switch between different aspect ratios.

Additionally, it’s weather-sealed, features twin UHS-II card slots and promises a battery life that will let trigger-happy photographers fire off 820 shots per charge.

Granted, it’s not going to be a camera for everyone, especially at this budget; though it’s certainly exciting to see Fujifilm continue to push the boundaries of making great photography that little bit more accessible.

The Fujifilm GFX100RF will be available in April with an RRP of $8,799. Find out more below.
