While the exterior of any yacht is important to deliver an immediate wow factor, once you’re actually on the vessel the visual spectacle is harder to appreciate. This is where the team at Norm Architects come in – a firm that has recently completed a project on a Y9 sailing yacht – resulting in one of the most elegantly designed interior fit-outs that you’ll ever have the pleasure of laying eyes on.

The Danish studio Norm Architects was contracted to redesign the interior of the German shipyard-built Y Yachts Y9, a sailing vessel that features a length of nearly 30m and a beam of 6.8m. As an impressively versatile yacht, its interior can be configured in any of five different ways from the shipyard to allow its owner to tailor the vessel to their lifestyle and anticipated usage, a fact that also gives Norm Architects a degree of flexibility and freedom in their approach to the interior.

As a yacht for families and other informal groups, the design firm has taken a restrained and minimalist approach to the fit-out to allow the owner as much freedom as possible, using dark timber heavily for much of the panelling and contrasting cream upholstery alongside suede-covered cabinetry.

Despite much of the aesthetic comprising just two tones and natural textures, the effect is unambiguously considered with rich detail that reveals itself under a glance, with thoughtful inclusion such as train-style leather handles on the ceilings and cove lighting around the foot of the beds.

Another design choice that goes a long way in softening the high-contrast colour palate is the gentle curves found throughout the interior, from the walls and ceilings to the table corners and banister ends, allowing seamless transitions from one space to the next. Norm Architects have nailed the execution of this Y9 yacht interior, demonstrating that strong design can successfully translate from one medium to the next, be it on land or the water.
