After years of speculation, the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser Prado has finally been unveiled ahead of an arrival in Australia in mid-2024, making it the first new Prado in nearly 15 years.

Known as the 2024 LandCruiser in the US, and 250 Series in Japan, the iconic 4×4 will retain the Prado name in Australia and will introduce even boxier styling than the LandCrusier 300 — similar to the new Lexus GX we saw months ago. And in my opinion, it looks better than both.

Toyota claims the new five or seven-seat LandCruiser Prado — built on the 300 Series and Lexus GX TNGA-F platform — has a 50% increase in frame rigidity, as well as a 30% increase in overall rigidity, with improved wheel articulation. Towing capacity is rated at 2722kg in the US for petrol and 3500kg for diesel (Australian numbers unconfirmed).

The new 2024 Toyota LandCruiser Prado is 100mm longer than its predecessor at 4925mm, 95mm wider at 1980mm, and 20mm taller at 1870mm. It also has a 60mm longer wheelbase at 2850mm.

The powertrains that have been confirmed so far include a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol (207kW/430Nm), a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel (150kW/500Nm) sans mild-hybrid set-up, a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine (120kW/246Nm), and… for the first time for a LandCrusier, a full hybrid 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol-electric (243kW/630Nm).

However, there is currently no confirmation the Australian market will get the full hybrid. At this stage, the only powertrain confirmed for Australia is a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system producing 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque, similar to that of the HiLux GR Sport.

As per leaked images, a contemporary rectangular headlight or retro circular headlight – inspired by the LandCruiser 70 Series of the 1980s — will be offered on the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser Prado. Some publications report that only the rectangular headlight will arrive in Australia, while others say a choice of front ends is unconfirmed.

Premium models in the US have been announced with wireless phone charging, a 14-speaker JBL sound system, multi-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry and start, a digital key, a head-up display, a digital rear-view mirror, and a sunroof. Both the instrument cluster and infotainment will be displayed via individual 12.3-inch widescreens.

Local pricing is also yet to be confirmed but it’s safe to say you can expect an increase on the base price of $62,830.
