Every winter, some of the rarest and most important classic cars gather on the frozen lake at St Moritz for the celebration of speed and spectacular automotive design that is the I.C.E. event. Held over two days, the 2023 event showcased some truly remarkable cars, including the Maserati 420M/58 “Eldorado” from 1958 the beautiful Marcello Gandini-designed Lancia Strato’s HF Zero and the 1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II, which drew a crowd of more than 11,000 attendees.
Part of the reason for the event is the annual gathering of judges to decide the winning cars across a number of different categories, including Open Wheels, Barchettas on the Lake, Le Mans 100 and the Concours d’Elegance’s “Best in Show” award, which celebrates the different vehicles historical significance, originality and overall condition. The other reason cars arrive from all over the world to participate is the opportunity to test the horsepower and handling across the treacherous icy surface of the lake, serving up the opportunity to open up the tap with relative safety and see what each car is capable of.
“We are very satisfied with this 2023 edition that confirms the choice of the new format designed over two days,” said Marco Makaus, the creator of I.C.E. St. Moritz. “48 hours of emotions where the stage of the St. Moritz Lake welcomed enthusiasts who came from all over the world.” If you’re an auto enthusiast with a taste for the best of the best, the 2023 show should tell you that I.C.E. St. Moritz is one event you need to attend in your life.
