- Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a modern refresh of the very first G-Wagens, officially known as the G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s.
- With plenty of nods to the original, it arrives in either Agave Green, Colorado Beige, or Cream White; as well as your choice of petrol or diesel engine.
- The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s will be limited to 460 units with a starting price of €160,0555 (AU$286,710).
Not everything from the 1980s deserves to be revived, but Mercedes-Benz has exhumed one relic worth celebrating: the gloriously boxy original W460 Geländewagen. And now, it’s back with all that militaristic charm, draped over the bones of the modern G-Wagen.
Beyond being dubbed the ludicrously long-winded Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s (complete with those all-caps), it’s a very cool new car from the German automaker. Prospective owners will enjoy the choice of the G450d – housing a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel capable of generating 270kW – or the G500 format featuring a petrol-powered 3.0-litre straight-six that delivers 328kW.
That is, however, not the only choice on the menu. Mercedes-Benz is also offering three different colourways that all echo the paint jobs of the first-generation G-Wagens: Agave Green, Colorado Beige, or Cream White. Other exterior details that faithfully preserve the spirit of the past include orange indicators, a “Night Black Magno” grille, mirror caps, as well as a canvas-style cover for your rear-door spare tyre.

Perhaps the best vintage reference in this entire affair is the old-school Mercedes-Benz badge, which flaunts 80s-inspired lettering and the laurel wreath with a blue background. Another treat is the wheels, with classic five-spoke light-alloy numbers that are close to the originals that the W460 arrived with.
Inside, you can expect black leather seats that are sliced through with dove-grey fabric inserts, a dash handle that yells “STRONGER THAN THE 1980s,” plus a centre console badged with “1-of-460” to remind you you’re one of the chosen few.
Yes, it’s a limited edition, and yes, it’s expensive. but it’s also exciting to see the folks at Mercedes-Benz celebrating the very best of the marque’s heritage with a proper level of attention to detail.
There’s no word on Australian pricing yet, though if you’re curious about the ballpark figure based on international availabilities, there’s a 19% VAT-inclusive European price that starts from €160,0555 (AU$286,710). Round up to $300,000 just to be safe…
