The popularity of electric mountain bikes is growing by the year and it makes sense – if most of the fun in mountain biking is going downhill, why wouldn’t you want a little help getting up them? The latest brand to get in on the action is none other than automaker Audi, announcing its own electric mountain bike inspired by its own Audi RS Q e-tron E2 rally car.
As you’d expect from an engineering giant, Audi hasn’t pulled any punches with its electric mountain bike, arriving with a blended carbon and aluminium frame that’s both strong and lightweight and a 250-watt motor with 90Nm of torque that’ll get you up to speeds of 25km/h with five different riding modes. The motor draws from a large 720Wh lithium-ion battery, while the sizable front forks offer 180mm of travel that’ll be more than enough to shred even the most technical downhill mountain biking trails.
It’s a somewhat unexpected launch from the German automaker, but one that makes sense as it forges towards an electrified future for its four-wheeled vehicles. While it’s certainly not the most expensive electric mountain bike on the market, it also isn’t the most affordable arriving with an RRP of €8,900 (AU$14,350).
