Despite being cut from the roster back in 2020, the BMW 5 Series Touring is set to make an unexpected return here in Australia as a high-performance wagon featuring an all-electric powertrain.
Breaking the mould with a next-gen model, BMW is hoping the i5 M60 xDrive will help redefine both luxury and sustainability in the Australian automotive market.
Anticipated to hit domestic showrooms between this coming July and September, the freshly announced BMW 5 Series Touring aims to blend performance with a renewable twist. Under the bonnet, the i5 M60 xDrive houses dual electric motors capable of delivering an impressive 442kW and 820Nm of power, with a white-knuckle sprint time of just 3.9 seconds.
For reference, that’s only a tenth of a second slower than its sedan equivalent; it’ll also be able to achieve an electronically limited top speed of 230 km/h. All this power arrives via an 81.2kWh battery pack, providing a claimed WLTP driving range of up to 506 kilometres, which is only slightly less than the aforementioned sedan (but does have quick charging capabilities).
As for the interior, as per Drive, the i5 M60 Touring shares its underpinnings, interior, technology, and most body panels with its sedan counterpart. You’ll be able to enjoy a generous 570 litres of boot space with the rear seats up (80 litres more than the sedan). With the seats folded down, the cargo capacity is expanded to an impressive 1,700 litres.
Priced at $219,900 plus on-road costs, the i5 M60 xDrive can be yours for just $4,000 more than its sedan sibling, making it a compelling buy for equal speed and greater boot space.
