For those with more elevated tastes, the typical EV design might not do much to get the heart racing, as today’s freshly imagined electric cars can give the feeling of driving an aerodynamic spacecraft. English electro-conversion specialists Lunaz are doing their bit to offer something for classic-car enthusiasts, with their latest electric project revealed as a rare 1961 Bentley S2 Continental.
In essence, the electrically inclined firm takes the most desirable and beautifully designed vintage cars and refits them with a future-proof powertrain, bringing the best of the 20th century into the 21st. The process starts with a down-to-the-millimetre inspection of the vehicle before it’s 3D CAD scanned and rebuilt using traditional coachbuilding techniques – with the addition of a new motor, wifi, infotainment system and more.
The 1961 Bentley S2 Continental coupé that Lunaz has most recently worked on was one of four known examples, possibly making it the rarest electric conversion car in the world as it now features a proprietary electric powertrain capable of 395 hp that sees a swift sprint time of 6.2 seconds. While it’s unclear exactly how much this modern restoration costs, Lunaz’s most popular Range Rover Classic conversion starts from £245,000 (AU$427,246), which suggests the S2 Continental would set you back significantly more.
