  • Amazon MGM Studios has greenlit the development of a Tiger Woods biopic with director Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard) attached.
  • The film will be an adaptation of The Tiger Slam by Kevin Cook, which details when the golfing great won four consecutive major championships in the early 2000s (i.e. the titular “Tiger Slam”).
  • Tiger Woods biopic release date: TBA.

In this era of entertainment, every sporting GOAT deserves an HBO documentary about their legendary exploits as well as a suspiciously manicured biopic (or an entire movie adjacent to them about their gamechanging sneaker deal). That’s why Amazon MGM Studios is now developing such a project about the one and only Tiger Woods.

With King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green in final talks to helm this adaptation of sporting greatness, and Barack & Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground banner attached to produce alongside Winkler Films, the forthcoming affair is based on Kevin Cook’s The Tiger Slam.

Cook – a former Sports Illustrated senior editor and Golf Magazine’s editor-in-chief – closely examined the phenomenal early victory streak that pushed the future 15-time major winner and billionaire athlete so much further ahead than his pro golf tour rivals. The Tiger Slam is also textured with recounts from Woods’ caddie, coach, opponents, as well as his supporters.

The film is expected to focus on when he knocked down four consecutive major championships, known as the titular “Tiger Slam.” There is, however, a slightly hagiographic catch to all this.

This biopic will apparently be limited to just that. According to Variety, Tiger Woods’ dramatic life off the green circa 2009 won’t be depicted: not the spectacular fall from grace in the wake of numerous extramarital affairs driven by sex addiction; the eye-watering loss of sponsorships deals that followed immediately thereafter; nor the drunk driving incidents.

Par for the course when the subject matter is directly involved in an executive production aspect. But in this case, it seems to be due to the specific scope of the narrative.

Further details surrounding Amazon MGM Studios’ Tiger Woods biopic – including casting, an official release date, and first trailer – have yet to be confirmed. Keep an eye out here for update as they come to light.
