After much speculation and countless false confirmations by an entire litany of unverified third-party sources, Mike Tyson himself has announced the opponent for his return fight will be none other than Roy Jones Jr. But this fight comes with an interesting proposition attached…
According to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, the undercard fights will pit boxers against MMA fighters – which should be an interesting display of adaptation and survival a la McGregor vs Mayweather.
In addition to this, the former World Heavyweight Champion unveiled his latest venture entitled Legends Only League (probably because League of Legends has been taken for some time now). As per the site description:
Inside every athlete, there is a drive to continue on, to fight, and to never give up. Legends Only League brings the best of the best back into the ring, onto the court, and back on the field. Because talent, skill, and the drive to compete never go away.
Created and owned by Mike Tyson and Eros Innovations, Legends Only League is a next-generation sports venture which aims to provide “full support and infrastructure” to the world’s greatest athletes. Expect consumer products, live events, premium content, and full-service athlete management.
Tyson first retired in 2005 with a 50-6 record after being soundly defeated by Kevin McBride. Jones, on the other hand, retired in 2018 with a 66-9 record. Given both fighters are renowned for their speed and devastating knockout potential, it’ll certainly make for entertaining viewing.
Currently dubbed ‘Frontline Battle’, the Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr eight-round exhibition event is expected to take place at Dignity Health Sports Park in California on September 12th of this year.
Stay tuned for updates.
