Following the announcement of Perth’s $100 million surf park, Melbourne’s URBNSURF will soon be competing against a slightly more local rival establishment in Surf ‘n’ Play Aquatic Park.
After five years of anticipation and a lengthy government approval process, the surfing and water destination is on track to become the largest venue of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
Nestled between the southeastern suburbs of Moorabbin and Mordialloc — and covering an impressive 38,200 square metres of combined indoor and outdoor space — this state-of-the-art water park has been designed by the creators behind the Commonwealth Games-hosting Melbourne Aquarium and Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre (MSAC).
Surf ‘n’ Play Aquatic Park will feature a dedicated surfing section, with specially built wave pools capable of producing one wave every ten seconds (up to six feet in height). To ensure all skill levels are catered for, four distinct surfing zones have been proposed so that everyone from beginners to seasoned groms can enjoy the artificial swells.
In addition to surfing, you can also expect classic water park attractions such as six massive water slides, gamified water tunnels, as well as a relaxing lazy river for those who prefer a more leisurely experience.
While an official opening date has yet to be announced, the two-year construction phase is expected to commence within the next year.
