Five years after the Super ShowDown pay-per-view event was hosted at the Melbourne Cricket Ground before a sea of 70,000 adoring local fans, the WWE is eyeing a return to Australia.
According to a report published by Wrestling Observer (via The Sporting News), the Vince McMahon-founded company has engaged in preliminary talks with the Western Australian government to negotiate something within the coming year. And it’s already progressed beyond the expression of interest stage.
WWE officials have also recently toured Perth’s Optus Stadium as a potential venue. It’s understood that this proposed premium live event will likely occur sometime around February/March 2024, prior to when WrestleMania 40 hits Philadephia.

This comes to light shortly after the WWE cancelled a multi-city tour of Australia due to scheduling conflicts, which was communicated to fans with an email that hinted at an “exciting new live event announcement” on the horizon as a consolation prize of sorts.
It also comes to light at a time when WA Premier Mark McGowan has been actively campaigning to bring more headline events to the state, such as the forthcoming Perth-only Coldplay concert.
Incidentally, the UFC – which will soon merge with the WWE to form a single $30 billion entity under Endeavour – brought a major event in Perth this past February, wherein homegrown Aussie featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski challenged lightweight champion Islam Makhachev for the latter’s belt in a bid to become two-division king.
Safe to say, between UFC 284 and the long-awaited WWE return, Perth is steadily cementing its status as the combat sports capital of Australia (both real and scripted).
