Fresh from its fun and well-priced collab with New Balance, Samsonite is also taking things upstream — or into first and business class cabins, more accurately — via its new BOSS aluminium capsule collection.

Consisting of four hard-case luggage designs, ranging in carrying capacity between 40-160 litres, the co-designed range is a touch more stylish than your average C-Lite Spinner. Unsurprisingly, that’s reflected in the price; with even the smallest cabin-size suitcase starting at $1,349.

Each suitcase in the BOSS x Samsonite range is underscored by a similarly stealthy, all-black-everything look. Remember the tank-like ‘Tumbler’ of Chris Nolan’s Batman films? Imagine that… but as a range of premium travel cases, and you’ve pretty much got the gist of it.

Talking about details: the aluminium exterior of each bag has been treated with an electrochemical process known as anodisation, resulting in a distinctly tonal look that, additionally, makes them tougher and resistant to corrosion.

For decorative motifs, the design team at BOSS opted for a repetitive geometric monogram — sort of resembling the crystalline structure of graphite. It’s an intelligent choice that sidesteps the brand’s prior associations with large, on-the-nose logography.

Pictured: This 106L ‘Trunk’ suitcase is the priciest entry in the new BOSS x Samsonite capsule ($1,849), complete with reduced-noise wheels and a satin-effect lining.

In fact, the bold serif-free ‘BOSS’ logo only appears in three places on any of the capsule’s designs on both the embossed leather side and top handles, in addition to the case’s frontal badging.

As you’d expect, the build quality is edging on Tumi given Samsonite has incorporated a number of visible premium details. Our favourite of these has to be the reinforced corners and butterfly-style locks — TSA-approved, of course.
