The briefcase shares the same formal grave as the everyday necktie and increasingly, it’s tote bags that are filling the void as a more casual, personally expressive daily carry-all for working professionals. Much like the briefcases, quality matters when you’re picking out a tote bag and the team at Sea Bags has just announced a limited run of totes constructed from the recycled sails of Gianni Agnelli’s yacht, Tiziana.
For something you’re going to use five days out of seven, material construction matters as much as the story behind it. With the Heritage Tiziana Tote, you’re getting both.
The Tiziana was originally commissioned by Gianni Agnelli when he was just 25 years old, right as he took the reins at Fiat and began his ascent to the most powerful corridors in European commerce. Constructed in 1963 by the leading Abeking & Rasmussen boatbuilding firm, it was an extremely rare sailing yacht thanks to its 35.6m length and reflected Agnelli’s enduring passion for sailing.
Agnelli once said “I like the wind because you can’t buy it,” and while that’s true, the same can’t be said for the sails of the Tiziana, which Sea Bags uncovered in the inventory of its partner North Sails. Tucked away in a North Sails warehouse loft, once it was confirmed the sails had indeed come from the one and only Tiziana the decision to create a range of bags came immediately.
Steeped in nautical tradition and directly linked to one of the most stylish men of the 20th century, the Heritage Tiziana Tote evokes this history with the rolled leather handles and antique brass hardware paired with the bag. Each section of the sail is slightly different due to the unique zig-zag stitching pattern, making every bag distinct from others in the limited run.
Measuring 43mm in length and 35cm in height, its approximate 25L interior is more than large enough for your laptop and headphones. The Gianni Agnelli-linked Heritage Tiziana Tote bag is currently available as a limited run of just 50 bags with an RRP of $500 (AU$745).
