Another day, another sartorially inclined Buyer’s Guide. This time around, we’re dedicating page space to the humble full-length trouser (better known in casual parlance as “dress pants”).

A crucial element in most menswear ensembles, you want dress pants to be comfortable, complementary to whatever great statement items are worn up top, and importantly, flatter your height.

Here are a dozen standout examples, curated by Team Boss Hunting, that you can buy in Australia.

Boss Hunting’s Best Dress Pants For Men

Nana Judy ‘The Avenue’ Baggy Drill Pant

Not all quality dress pants need to be a navy/charcoal worsted situation — as these ‘Avenue’ drill trousers from Nana Judy so effectively prove.

A great way to tap the fashion zeitgeist’s latest obsession with baggy silhouettes without going overboard, the use of tan drill cotton means that this style can be worn with much more than your best business casual set-up.

However you choose to style these (note the belt loops for additional accessorising options) just ensure that your choice in uppers is similarly voluminous: so as to accentuate the Avenue’s fulsome, double-pleated fit.

Also available in black drill cotton.

Kit Blake ‘Duke’ Wool Flannel Trousers

dress pants for men

DETAILS

  • 300g Italian flannel
  • High-waisted
  • Single pleat
  • Brown colour

Crafted for comfort and longevity, the Kit Blake ‘Duke’ trousers are an easy Fall essential.

Made from an Italian-milled Vitale Barberis Canonico wool flannel — clocking in at an impressive 300g — these single-pleated trousers offer a relaxed silhouette with a gently tapered leg for a clean look.

Elegant dressing has been front of mind here as Kit Blake has outfitted the ‘Duke’ with its signature oversized side adjusters. The rise is high-waisted, while the leg is half-lined for added breathability.

Pair these with a rugged oxford and penny loafers for a foolproof casual look, or with your favourite winter-weight sportcoat. Note how, in sharp contrast to many ready-to-wear dress pants, these arrive unhemmed for all your tailoring needs.

Madewell ‘Roebling’ Pleated Trousers

dress pants

DETAILS

  • Poly-wool blend
  • Regular fit
  • Single pleat
  • ‘Black coal’ colour

Thinking, “Pleats… yes please”? Then Madewell’s latest is probably for you.

A more louche, relaxed iteration of the traditional grey trouser, the ‘Roebling’ can be worn smartly or in full-blown Nolita dirtbag style. 30% of the pant’s fabric (milled in Italy) consists of recycled polyester.

Constructed with welt pockets and a hook-and-bar closure, the overall wearing experience here is clean and unfussy. Madewell even sells a matched blazer model of the same name (on the off-chance you were in the market for a two-piece feed).

BOSS Slim-Fit Trousers In Micro-Pattern Linen

DETAILS

  • Linen/lyocell blend
  • Medium-rise
  • Single pleat
  • Available in blue or light green

Trousers in a contemporary tapered fit, from a brand that absolutely needs no introduction. A great alternative for leaner shoppers who don’t necessarily love the revival of baggy, fulsome silhouettes; these slim BOSS trousers are made in a blend of linen and lyocell.

The latter, in particular, is a clever inclusion in seasonal tailoring. A quasi-synthetic material (made from pulped cellulose fibre) lyocell complements natural fibres like linen with its sweat-wicking, highly absorbent properties.

In these particular BOSS trousers, the weave of the fabric has resulted in a marled, variegated aesthetic: great for casual pants, even better when worn with the matching slim-fit sportcoat.

Polo Ralph Lauren Stretch Corduroy Pant

dress pants for men

DETAILS

  • Cotton/elastane blend
  • Low-rise
  • Flat fronts
  • Clay colour

Indulge your penchant for neo-prep style with this pair of slightly stretchy cotton cords from Polo Ralph Lauren. Dyed in a burnished, suitably autumnal shade of brown, these trousers promise comfort and good looks in equal measure.

Executed in a classic straight-cut fit that will flatter a range of lower body shapes, these cord dress pants excel at all of the “in-between” occasions — for times when you want something a little less rugged than denim that’s still capable of dressing down your go-to blazer.

Belt loops, for securing your favourite large buckled accessory, complete the picture. Take a leaf out of Ralph’s universe and consider wearing these hiking boots and knitwear.

P Johnson Classic Chino Trousers

DETAILS

  • Japanese cotton twill
  • High-rise
  • Double pleats
  • ‘Butter’ colour

Cut in a high-waisted, straight-leg silhouette that wouldn’t look out of place on Pat Riley (circa 1980) these ‘Butter’ chinos, by Aussie tailoring outfit P Johnson, live up to their super-smooth moniker.

Double pleats and belt loops complete the throwback picture. Unsurprisingly, these look their best with other similarly vintagey sportswear (think crewneck sweaters or slouchy knit polos).

The Japanese-made twill has a hardy, breathable handle; and in the event this creamy off-white colourway isn’t for you, there are always four more options to choose from.

Much like Kit Blake, these chinos present a great option for tinkerers given that they’re sold unhemmed so that you can have more control over nailing your desired length.

Anglo-Italian Tailored Trouser

DETAILS

  • British wool flannel
  • Medium-rise
  • Single pleat
  • Brown colourway

Though unseasonably cold weather isn’t as regular of an occurrence here in Australia as it is abroad, jumping into a pair of Anglo-Italian flannels will sure make you wish it was.

The hefty woollen fabric is woven for the London-based menswear atelier in Huddersfield and, in this model, appears as a mélange of subtle taupe, fawn, as well as mid-brown yarns.

True to Anglo-Italian’s distinctly restrained house style, the details are all low-key. An extended waistband and side adjusters ensure a comfortable fit while a single pleat (running continuously from waist to foot) gives this the sort of elegant on-body motion you’re more likely to find in custom suiting.

Gant Regular Fit Twill Chinos

DETAILS

  • Cotton/elastane blend
  • Medium-rise
  • Flat fronts
  • Black colourway

It seems a bit counterintuitive to pick a pair of black dress pants from America’s most storied sportswear brand, but that’s just how good these twill chinos are.

Cut in organic cotton twill (woven with a touch of stretch), these are a laidback everyday option that can be worn — in a pinch — pretty smartly. In a nod to Gant’s archival designs, the interior facings of the waistband are covered in chambray. Functional? Not particularly. Clever? Almost certainly.

For a real ‘It Boy in 2024’ aesthetic, consider wearing this with a belt clip full of accessories and your favourite chunky derby. (We quite like Paraboot, if the latter style of design tickles your fancy.)

R.M. Williams ‘Berwick’ Chino

DETAILS

  • Cotton/elastane blend
  • Medium-rise
  • Single pleat
  • ‘Sand’ colourway

Purpose-made by R.M. Williams to “pair effortlessly” with the brand’s signature ‘Craftsman’ boot, these ‘Berwick’ chinos are a shot of vibrant colour in a sea full of (admittedly more versatile) grey, navy, and cream-coloured dress pants.

Suitable for both casual and slightly smarter wear, these are dyed in a sandy gold hue that puts you in mind of gold rushes, wattleseed, and various other appropriately ocka references.

Unlike the majority of RTW brands, R.M. Williams even continues to offer these chinos in two lengths. For lankier shoppers, just roll the cuffs back on the L34 variants and you’re more or less good to go.

Suitsupply ‘Firenze’ Trousers

DETAILS

  • Polyester/viscose blend
  • Medium-rise
  • Single pleat
  • Navy colourway

A sophisticated pair of casual trousers that reaffirms why Suitsupply continues to be one of the leading value plays in the market, these ‘Firenze’ dress pants are cut high-waisted and straight through the leg — a great starting point for a range of different body shapes.

Crafted in a four-ply wool woven by Italian textile specialists Rogna, the ‘Firenze’ has been optimised specifically for travellers: thanks to its robust drape and ‘recovery’ properties (i.e. the ability to resist creases).

As ever, Suitsupply can offer in-store alterations — sometimes as rapidly as same-day — on these dress pants. When in doubt: opt for a 5-centimetre turnup on your trouser cuff.

Uniqlo Pleated Wide Pants

dress pants for men

DETAILS

  • Polyester/viscose blend
  • Medium-rise
  • Single pleat
  • Navy colourway

A really great stopgap if you’re looking for workaday dress pants that will do the job in the office/on your daily commute, these Uniqlo trousers are as close as you can get to loungewear-esque comfort without delving into that category.

The wide leg opening and medium-rise waistband are extremely comfortable. In a move typical of the Japanese fashion giant, these $60 trousers also integrate a surprising amount of fashion technology.

The fabric here is recycled polyester, and Uniqlo has even treated it so that it stretches bidirectionally. Also available in a grey colourway.

MJ Bale ‘Fresco’ Trouser

DETAILS

  • Cotton/elastane blend
  • Medium-rise
  • Flat fronts
  • ‘Driftwood’ colourway

Tailoring obsessives might be a bit perplexed to find that M.J. Bale’s new ‘Fresco’ dress pants aren’t made of the eponymous high-twist tropical wool. Assuming you can look past such false advertising, you’ll find a versatile pair of khaki-esque cotton trousers that are pretty much the coolest thing you can wear (notwithstanding shorts) in the first half of the year.

Milled for the brand by the Italian weaver Tessuti di Sondrio, the ‘Fresco’ has a dry, peached handle that makes it a cinch to wear across a variety of seasons.

Cut to a slim fit with a gentle knee-high taper, these work best on a svelte lower half with loafers or a pair of Belgian slippers. Available as part of a matching suit.
