IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Congratulations to our winner Ward G.

Like the rare filmic sequel that trumps the original (here’s lookin at you, The Godfather: Part II) M.J. Bale are back this year, and better than ever, with a follow-up to their popular 2023 Father’s Day giveaway.

In partnership with Australia’s “first carbon neutral menswear brand”, Boss Hunting readers will once again be in the running to win a gift voucher valued at $2,999: giving fathers and sons across the nation the tools to sharpen up their spring wardrobe.

Speaking of tools: every dollar of our Father’s Day giveaway can be dropped on Bale’s brand new Spring 2024 collection. Shot on location in Lake Como, this rugged assemblage of suiting and vintage-inspired sportswear is a certified papa-pleaser. The cherry on top? It marks 15 years of M.J. Bale.

Embrace the Father’s Day spirit with a couple of our favourite pieces from the collection, curated below.

A Plethora Of Polos

For Spring 2024, Bale’s designers have leaned in hard to the humble polo shirt: with no fewer than three variations of this classic shirting layer we’re happy to give Boss Hunting‘s stamp of approval to.

The most versatile of these is the ‘Furlong’ ($139.95) — aptly named, since this short-sleeved design is made to go the distance. Available in four summery colours, all of which have been dusted with just the right vintage sheen, it’s knit for max comfort from a blend of cashmere and cotton.

A rolling, button-free collar completes the picture: best deployed beneath your favourite blazer — aviators and Americano optional.

The ‘Felip’ ($139.95), in navy or grey mélange, is cut from a similar cloth. Literally. A cloud-soft cotton/cashmere fabric makes it a cinch to wear for long stretches: handy if, like the boys in Varenna, you spend your day bobbing between lakeside villas and vaporinas.

As for those ‘in-between’ situations? When something marginally smarter than a short-sleeve polo is required? The ‘Axel’ ($149.95) is a garment we can’t get enough of. Cut with the same versatile collar as the Furlong, its big point of departure is the full-length sleeve. Just as well: the finely knit cotton jersey is a fabric you’ll want to wear more of.

Tailormade Solutions

MJ Bale Spring 2024

If your old man is the kind who relishes every opportunity to dress up, the Spring 2024 collection has more than a few styles to delight him on Father’s Day. Each is cut to a consistent style we’ve taken to describing as the ‘free & easy’: think a softer, higher armhole; lightweight half-lining; double vents; and just enough of a taper to flatter the wearer’s shoulders.

In trademark Bale style, the brand’s ‘Logan’ suit is offered in jacket ($549) and trouser ($299) separates. Both are cut in a robust mix of cotton and linen — rustic, long-stapled fibers that soften the ka-pow of the checkered ‘Prince of Wales’ pattern.

And if a full two-piece in Riddler-green is a touch much, the ‘Sturman’ jacket ($499) is a safer option to be relied upon during the warmer months. Tailored in either pink or blue cotton-linen, we liken it to the hopsack blazer’s lighter, jauntier cousin — or is that stepdad?

Lean In To Linen

In classic Bale form, linen looms large in the Spring 2024 collection. You and dad will find it in all of the familiar places: made up into double-breasted jackets, deconstructed suiting, and a key element in the brand’s ever popular wool-silk-linen sportcoat (made as always with Loro Piana fabric).

But if the big factor in dad’s love for linen is tactility, get him a rotation of ‘Bradfield’ shirts ($169.95) and call it a day. Cool, strong, and available in a range of gauzy shades, they’ll age as well as he has.
