Adidas and BEAMS have teamed up for a special Spirit of the Games sneaker collaboration, just in time for the Tokyo Olympic Games (which begins today). The retro-inspired runners are a nod to the 1984 Olympic Games which took place in Los Angeles and was also the first Olympics that counted Adidas as an official sponsor.
The collaboration is set to drop a trio of different styles, each of which offers quite a distinct look from the others. One pair is a completely laceless slip-on, another involves velcro straps, while the last is a more classic lace-up pair of kicks.
All three of the shoes feature cleanly executed white grain leather, with the lace-up pair also featuring a mesh textile middle. On the outside panel of each of the pairs, the Adidas Spirit of the Games logo is present in a nice design touch by BEAMS.

Overall, each of the sneakers offers a fairly minimal silhouette, complete with a two-piece foam sole. Although the designs are very much inspired by the 80s, they still feel like a contemporary interpretation of the past, as opposed to a 1:1 reissue.
The 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles were an important one for Adidas. Off the back of sponsoring the Summer Games, Adidas produced plenty of special edition merch, a good portion of which can still be found for sale online today. Fatefully, Los Angeles is locked in to host their next Olympics before the end of this decade, after winning the bid to host the 2028 Games. It’ll mark the third time that the City of Angles hosts the Olympic Games, the first being in 1932.
The Adidas x Beams Spirit of the Games collection drops Friday 23rd over at the BEAMS site, which you can check out below.
