American art collective MSCHF is back at it again with another weird and wonderful project, following up its cologne that smells like WD-40, its $335 original Andy Warhol sketch lottery and the Birkenstock sandals made from a Hermès Birkin bag. This week the group announced the Big Red Boots, with MSCHF giving everyone the opportunity to walk down the street looking like Astro Boy.
With the Brooklyn-based group growing in notoriety, the primitively shaped shoes have already been spotted on the feet of a number of influencers and celebrities ahead of the comical boot’s public release day on the 17th of this month at 3 AM Sydney time. They might give onlookers an impression that’s equal parts cartoonish and ridiculous, but they certainly don’t look as ridiculous on your feet as when you need to take them off, with TikTok user @lilap3 demonstrating you literally need two people to remove them.
“Hundreds of characters, from the mouse to the plumber to the hungry yellow circle, have conducted the same exercise: how do you make a shoe using as few geometric primitives as possible, and still have it read instantly?” MSCHF explains about the Big Red Boots. “When a human hand had to draw hundreds of frames of footwear, this was a practical necessity. It has also produced a symbol.” Set your alarms to cop your own pair for US$350 (AU$504).
