When the original Formula 1 watches arrived in 1986, they were — famously — the first products to bear the signature of the then-newly-merged TAG Group and Heuer companies.
Combining the latter’s horological prowess with avant-garde TAG design, the Formula 1 collection has gone on to become a lynchpin of the contemporary TAG Heuer label.
Embedded deeply in the sport and culture of F1, the current Formula 1 range is getting a significant update this year; with a reveal (in Los Angeles earlier today) of five new interpretations. At a glance: all are titanium, 44mm in size and powered by TAG’s self-winding Calibre 16 movement.

Four of the five new Formula 1 models are inspired by the imagery of F1 night racing; with the case and peripheral elements akin to race car chasses, illuminated by accents in vivid lime-green, blue or red.
At 44mm, the form factor on all these chronographs is intentionally significant: echoed across tactile elements like the crown, pushers, and tachymeter bezel.
According to TAG spokespeople, the key to nailing these watches’ “Grand Prix by night” aesthetic was to introduce “a sense of animation and movement” into the design.
No matter the particular colourway you’re tackling, the effect is achieved via strategic deployment of colour (e.g. the contrast-colour ring that sits between each watch’s case and bezel).
Of course, considering the name and reputation of the overarching Formula 1 collection, TAG didn’t miss the chance to gild this launch with the arrival of a new special edition — made in collaboration with Oracle Red Bull Racing.
This release is far and away the most colourful of the new Formula 1s: incorporating a poppy yellow chronograph hand, red bezel ring, and blue chequerboard motif that cribs from the iconography of F1.
Additionally, unlike every other new release, this RBR-themed special edition is fitted with a bezel that is carbon-forged — as direct a reference as we can fathom to racecar engineering.
Expect the new Formula 1 chronographs to begin arriving in TAG Heuer boutiques this March. At time of writing we don’t have confirmed AUD pricing, but expect more
