The America’s Cup is set to make a splash next year for the 36th time in its 170-year history, with Swiss watchmakers OMEGA stepping up to the plate as official timekeepers of the prestigious sailing competition. To celebrate the return of the competition to the waters of Auckland, New Zealand in 2021, OMEGA announced a new addition to its historic Seamaster catalogue – the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 36th America’s Cup Limited Edition.
Presented on a structured blue and red rubber strap, the 43.5 mm timepiece is crafted from stainless steel and sports a blue ceramic diving bezel which incorporates white and red liquid ceramic to create a 5-minute countdown perfectly suited for racing.
Keen observers will spot the competition’s name transferred at the 6 o’clock mark of the polished white ceramic dial and the America’s Cup logo on the counterweight of the central seconds hand. On the caseback, the America’s Cup logo is stamped on sapphire crystal which hides the Seamaster’s Calibre 8900 chrono movement.
OMEGA’s announcement as Official Timekeeper of the event is proceeded by a long-standing partnership with the Emirates Team New Zealand and legendary sailor Sir Peter Blake which began 25 years ago.
“The choice of OMEGA was obvious,” said Grant Dalton, CEO of the Defender Emirates Team New Zealand. “They not only have a distinguished history as the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, but they have also established themselves as the leader of timekeeping on the water.”
The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 36th America’s Cup Limited Edition is limited to just 2,021 pieces. See more at omegawatches.com.
