The sold-out-everywhere Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch collaboration has unsurprisingly been one of the most hotly traded items of 2022, according to the StockX Big Facts 2022 Trends report that was released this week. Despite retailing for just $380, the MoonSwatch (of which there are 11 different versions in the collection) was selling on pre-owned platforms for thousands of dollars, which saw more than US$14 million (AU$20.5 million) spent on them since November last year.
To say the collaboration between the two Swatch Group stablemates was successful would be the horological understatement of the year, with unbridled hysteria overcoming enthusiasts as they tried to add one to their collection. Lines stretched for hundreds of meters at boutiques around the world, with violence even breaking out in some cases as the watch world got its first taste of a hype culture that had only been seen in the sneaker community before.
StockX also noticed a 584% YoY jump in searches for Swatch on its marketplace, with customers frustrated by the lack of stock available from the brand’s retail locations turning to the pre-owned market to find the model they wanted. Remarkably, this white-hot hype flowed on even further with Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek confirming in July that sales of the $9,750 Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch had increased by more than 50%.

The Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch collaboration wasn’t the only standout highlighted by the StockX report, with more than US$3 million (AU$4.3 million) spent on the Crocs Pollex Clog by Salehe Bembury slides. The adidas Samba silhouette saw an incredible trading increase of 485% YoY, while the Jordan 2 trade volume jumped 1000% YoY, with collectible LEGO also seeing sizable growth of 355% YoY.
StockX’s authenticity guarantee was likewise felt by the market, with the trading platform rejecting no less than 240,000 different products to a value of more than US$70 million (AU$102.5 million). As far as the most searched products on StockX heading into Christmas, Dunks, Jordan 1, Jordan 4 and Yeezy all received more than 500,000+ in the month of October alone.
