Gone are the days when a simple black or navy blue timepiece was enough to keep you in vogue, with coloured dials taking over everywhere you look. But while the last year or so might have seen unprecedented levels of hype around a specific shade of Tiffany blue, the new TAG Heuer Monaco Purple Dial is proof there are other colours that look even better.

It’s been a big year or so for the Monaco collection from TAG Heuer, with a number of different limited editions being released including Max Verstappen’s favourite titanium version, the Dark Lord and a Gulf special edition. Today, we get something a little more simple in its differences compared to the standard edition, but is no less effective at creating a striking impression on the wrist.

The 39mm stainless steel case is identical to other members of the Monaco family, with a blend of polished and brushed surfaces, rectangular chronograph pushers, and a sapphire crystal caseback. It’s the dial where the most significant difference is, with a graduated purple shade that is aubergine at its centre and fades to black around the circumference of the dial.

With a nice sunburst finish applied to the dial, it cuts a striking contrast against the steel and white hands, as well as the black sunken subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock. As you’ve seen in other versions of the Monaco design, the 6 o’clock position is home to the running seconds subdial and a modest, yet practical date window.

Beneath the dial is the in-house workhorse Calibre Heuer 02, which boasts not only a vertical clutch and column wheel, but also offers an impressive 80 hours of power reserve. Visible through the exhibition caseback, the movement has been adapted for this edition with a purple column wheel and purple text on the black automatic rotor.

Limited to a production run of just 500 pieces, the new TAG Heuer Monaco Purple Dial is a compellingly simple twist on an iconic silhouette, which brings a touch of personality without gasping for attention. It’s currently available in selected stores, with an RRP of $10,400.
