On paper, the idea of a diver’s travel watch doesn’t make much sense. On the wrist, however, the GMT-equipped diving watch makes for a perfect daily. And that’s exactly what we’ve got with the latest Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT.
The Pelagos line (alongside the Black Bay 58) is one of Tudor’s most successful in recent years, with the original blue dial FXD paying tribute to the watchmaker’s French Navy connection (more specifically, the Marine Nationale).
It paved the way for the release of a black dial version, the Pelagos 39, a Pelagos FXD Chrono Sailing Edition, and several others, underscoring the watch community’s appetite for robust, everyday titanium watches.
With a few time-only and chronograph references already in the catalogue, the addition of the Pelagos FXD GMT is a logical step for Tudor, and it’s hard to argue they haven’t executed it nicely. It features a 42mm Grade 2 titanium case that measures 12.7mm in thickness (52mm from lug-to-lug), with a fixed strap-bar design that’s in line with previous Pelagos FXD references.
Where the new Pelagos FXD GMT offers something different is the matte black dial, which now features a fourth orange GMT hand, as well as a ceramic bi-directional GMT bezel that nicely frames the dial.
The luminous hour markers and hands could be a point of contention due to their creamy, off-white colouring (reminiscent of the now discontinued Pelagos LHD); a callback to the the faux-patina trend of a few years ago when vintage-inspired watches were selling faster than brands could make them.
Lume colouring aside, the solid titanium caseback features the “M.N.24” engraving (“Marine Nationale 2024”) and guarantees the watch up to 200 metres of water resistance. The Pelagos FXD GMT arrives paired with a military green single-piece textile strap, which is secured with a titanium pin-buckle as opposed to the velcro-style fastening of previous Pelagos FXD references.
When you consider the number of watch enthusiasts who want a timepiece they can get wet, take a knock or two, and also offer tracking of two timezones, I’m sure the Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT will be a hit. Cop yours from Tudor Authorised Dealers today for a local retail price of $6,890.
