Footballers love to show off their wealth by wearing expensive clothes and driving flashy cars, but it’s not just the players who flex their bank accounts these days. Many top managers are getting in on the act in a subtle way, wearing stylish timepieces as they direct their players from the sidelines.
With many earning millions per season, it’s not surprising football managers also have expensive tastes, with the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola sporting timepieces from some of the world’s most esteemed watchmakers. In celebration of the men running the teams, here’s a look at the watches favoured by the Premier League’s best managers.
Jürgen Klopp – IWC Aquatimer Ceratanium 50 Years Aquatimer Edition
After winning the Champions League last season and currently sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table, it’s no surprise Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has treated himself to a watch that’s almost impossible to find. Limited to just 50 pieces, Klopp favours the understated Aquatimer from IWC, in particular, the Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Edition “50Yrs Aquatimer”. This fairly subtle black timepiece is made from a material known as Ceratanium (a mixture of ceramic and titanium), has a chronograph, and is 100 metres water resistant with digital month and date. When the watch was released in 2017 it was priced at US$46,800.
Pep Guardiola – Richard Mille RM010 Automatic AMC Blue
The Manchester City manager has been a long-time fan of Swiss watchmaker-to-the-athletic-superstars Richard Mille. The 1 of 30, £66,000 Richard Mille RM010 Automatic AMC Blue demonstrates Guardiola’s ties to City, with the eye-catching wristwatch featuring a bezel and strap matching the sky blue jerseys the team wears. This isn’t Guardiola’s only piece of wrist candy, with the Spaniard something of a watch connoisseur, often spotted wearing both a Richard Mille RM004 All Gray and a Rolex Deep Sea-Dweller.
Mauricio Pochettino – IWC Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Chronograph
Like Klopp, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of Swiss brand IWC. But unlike his German rival, Poch opts for the sleek Pilot Timezoner Chronograph that not only looks great but costs a hell of a lot less at £11,250. What makes this watch unique is the spectacular bezel engraved with all 24 time zones, making sure Poch is on time for training no matter what country the team is in.
Marco Silva – Cvstos Challenge Chrono II
Everton manager Marco Silva is an ambassador for the young Swiss brand Cvstos – so he has a pick of the entire range of watches. One of the chunkiest watches on this list, the Chrono II comes in blue and steel grey and retails for ~CHF15,000. Although Everton currently sits 18th on the table, at least Silva looks good watching his team get beat every week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition Red Devil Manchester United
Keeping things in-house, Manchester United gaffer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wears a limited edition TAG Heuer decorated in United colours. There are two versions of this watch on the market, with Solskjaer opting for the black and red timepiece with a skeletonised 45mm sapphire glass case. The impressive accessory also comes with the Manchester United logo and a price tag that won’t break the bank of die-hard fans. We wonder if he’ll have to return it when he gets the inevitable axe that’s falling.
Frank Lampard – Hublot Spirit Of Big Bang Titanium Blue
Normally spotted wearing a Patek Philippe, Frank Lampard has changed things up recently, sporting a Hublot Spirit Of Big Bang Titanium Blue. The colour scheme fits in with Chelsea’s rich royal blue, and the alligator strap complements the satin-finished and polished titanium case. Different to many of Hublot’s standard models, the Spirit Of Big Bang is a quality timepiece that looks good on Lampard’s wrist. Pick your own up at Selfridges for £18,200.
