  • This year, Qantas will offer direct season flights from Sydney to Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport — marking the 100th destination in the Flying Kangaroo’s network.
  • Effectively, the route cuts out several hours of travel compared to existing one-stop options and enables same-day travel to popular ski resorts in the beloved Hokkaido Prefecture.
  • The last time Qantas flew to Sapporo was in early 2020 with an “extremely positive” customer reception.

Aussies will soon be just a single hop away from Japan’s iconic snowfields as Qantas announces direct seasonal flights from Sydney to Sapporo (New Chitose Airport).

This nonstop route is scheduled to commence from December 15th, 2025 to March 28th, 2026 (i.e. the northern ski season), with services operating three times a week onboard the crimson carrier’s Airbus A330-200 (flight time: approx. 10 hours and 50 minutes).

On the way to the promised powder, you’ll depart Sydney in the morning and arrive at New Chitose Airport early in the evening; for the homebound flight, you’ll be able to enjoy one last morning on the slopes before departing for Sydney in the evening.

Between those dates, over 20,000 seats will be up for grabs — bringing Qantas’ total seats to Japan per year beyond the 850,000 benchmark (and pushing the Qantas Group’s annual tally to more than 1.5 million seats).

“We know Sapporo is an extremely popular winter destination for Aussies, who love the snow and we’re excited to make it even easier for them to reach Hokkaido’s world-class ski resorts with a direct flight from Sydney,” said Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace.

“These new flights will save passengers hours of travel time compared to connecting in Tokyo or other cities and give them more time to enjoy on the slopes.”

“Australians’ love affair with Japan is stronger-than-ever so it is fitting that Sapporo will also mark the 100th destination in the Qantas network, following the great new destinations we added last year like Paris, Palau, and Port Vila.”

Return Economy fares from Sydney to Sapporo — which start at around $1,600 — are now available via the Qantas website; and include checked baggage allowance, food and beverages, as well as inflight entertainment.
