While not likely to happen for at least another 5-10 years, a direct flight from Sydney to New York is certainly an idea we’d get around. Speaking at a media lunch in Sydney last week, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce revealed the airline “puts 300 people a day to New York anyway – it’s just that we can’t do (non-stop) with the technology (we have today).

“Once the technology happens we would go there straight away” Joyce told Australian Business Traveller. “We’re looking at the new Boeing 777-8X that would potentially have the range to do it, but that doesn’t come until (the early) 2020s.”

Eliminating the current stop in Los Angeles or Dallas Fort Worth would bring the trip close to 19 hours, 3.5 hours longer than today’s journey to New York, and positioning the flight as comfortably the longest in the world. A flight which Qantas’ Gareth Evans duly notes, “might not be for everybody.

Quite.
