Singapore Airlines have been dethroned as the world’s best airline at this year’s Skytrax World Airline Awards, with Middle Eastern giant Qatar Airlines taking out the top spot. Not only did it win the most prestigious award of the night, but it also finished top spot in a host of other categories, including being named world’s best business class, world’s best business class seat and best airline in the Middle East.
Of Qatar Airways’ win, group chief executive Mr Akbar Al Baker told The Independent, “It is a proud moment for the airline as our constant innovation and service standards set the benchmark in our industry.”
Don’t feel too bad for Singapore though, as the Asian carrier only dropped to second place on the list, with Japan’s ANA All Nippon Airways, Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific and the Dubai-based Emirates rounding our the top five.
The annual awards were voted for by more than 20 million passengers from around the world, with News.com.au reporting that the voting “took place from September 2018 to May 2019 with online voting in English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Russian.”
As well as crowning Qatar the best airline, Skytrax dished out a host of other awards, with Singapore Airlines taking the crown for the best cabin crew, AirAsia winning best low-cost airline, Taiwan’s EVA Air ranked the world’s cleanest airline and Air Transat being named best leisure airline.
